  • Vent Block (included in the above kit)

  • Caulk (optional)

STEP 1

Choose Your Location

Once you have decided if you will be building a square DIY propane fire pit or a round DIY propane fire pit, the first thing you must do is decide where you are going to build your gas fire pit. Remember, it must be an area with enough space for a liquid propane tank, or near a natural gas line. Outdoor Greatroom’s D.I.Y. burner kit comes ready to connect to a propane tank but also includes an easy conversion kit to convert it to a DIY natural gas fire pit. Please note, only certified technicians should run natural gas lines for your DIY natural gas fire pit. Some owners start with building a propane tank fire pit and later switch to a natural gas fire pit build. If using the recommended burner kit for your DIY fire pit, you can place on any level surface (even combustable decks). If installing on grass, allow for proper water drainage.

All steps are also covered in the instructional video at the bottom of this page.

STEP 2

Define Your Building Area

Building a DIY gas ROUND FIRE PIT: Mark a circle 40” in diameter.

If building a DIY gas SQUARE FIRE PIT: Mark an area 24” x 24”

STEP 3

Place Blocks

Place your first ring or square of blocks. This should be placed over your marked building area and will be the base of your DIY propane fire pit build. It is best to have an interior diameter between 32″-37″. Make sure all blocks are level.

Put down the second ring of blocks on top of the first while leaving space for the DIY kit’s included control panel and vent block (included in the recommended kit). If you choose to not use the vent included in the DIY burner kit, make sure your blocks are allotted enough space between them to allow air to flow underneath the burner. Ten square inches is sufficient.

For a gas taller at home fire pit build, add a third row of blocks.

STEP 4

Add Adhesive (optional)

If you are using heavy enough building material for your DIY gas fire pit, you do not necessarily have to add adhesive but it is recommended if you do not plan on moving your fire pit. If using adhesive, make sure to first place all blocks to make sure they fit, then remove and re-do while adding caulking. Apply pressure after each level. Make sure to let adhesive dry before moving on. Building a propane fire pit at home is fun so you may want to disassemble and reassemble your D.I.Y. gas fire pit, just for the fun of it!

STEP 5

Place Your DIY Gas Fire Pit Burner

Place burner on top of the concrete blocks. Make sure that there is at least a 1″ overlap to hold the burner in place. Make sure you order the correct burner shape for either a round or square DIY gas fire pit build.

Add Final Layer of Blocks

Add your final layer of blocks to finish your DIY propane fire pit build, making sure they over lap the burner plate. If a taller DIY gas fire pit is desired, add an additional layer of blocks on top.
